Can agates be found at the river?

You don’t necessarily need to be on an ocean beach in order to find agates. Many lakes and even river banks are well known for producing quality agates – most notably the Great Lakes. If you do a little research on your local area you may very likely find at least one location that is known to produce agates.

Where are agates most commonly found?

Agate is found throughout the world. In the United States it is produced in several western states; Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Montana are the chief sources of gemstones. Most agates occur in cavities in eruptive rocks or ancient lavas.

What river rocks are valuable?

Deerite, howieite, and zussmanite were first discovered in 1965 at the Laytonville Quarry in California. Because of their rarity, the three minerals are highly prized by California rockhounds.

What to look for when looking for agates?

Look for translucence in the stone. If the stone has been broken and you can see telltale traces of a quartz-like mineral along with the red, brown and orange color that comes with many types of agate, there is a good chance that you have an unpolished agate. Examine the stone for banding.

How can you tell agates from jasper?

Jaspers are commonly found in red, green, yellow, tan, brown, and even purple. Agates can be found in pretty much all colors, but certain colors will be more abundant depending on the area that you search. Agates found around the Great Lakes are often a dark reddish color with distinct banding.

Can I find gemstones in the river?

A wonderful variety of gemstones can be found in rivers. Sediment and rocks which have been transported by rivers are known as alluvial deposits. Alluvial deposits are great places to go rockhounding.

Is chalcedony same as agate?

Chalcedony is a broad term to describe a microcrystalline form of silica. Agate is any type of chalcedony which is translucent, while jasper is any type of chalcedony which is opaque.

What rocks do you look for in a river?

Sedimentary rock such as limestone, dolomite, and siltstone is commonly formed in or near water. Metamorphic rocks, like marble and schist, are also found in rivers. Granite, basalt, schist, limestone, shale, Jasper, agates, white or pink feldspar, and clear quartz are commonly found in rivers.

Can you find amethyst in rivers?

Common types of rocks found in creeks are quartz crystals, chert, agate, jasper, petrified wood, amethyst, and garnet, depending on the geology of the area. Many commercial gemstones are found in streams and rivers, but even ordinary rocks, worn smooth by tumbling water, have an appeal of their own.

What are geodes worth?

Geodes are highly valued for their content and appearance. The most valuable geodes are those that contain perfectly formed flawless crystals of amethyst, celestine, calcite, or other rare minerals. Geodes are worth from $2-5 for common specimens and up to several thousand for exceptional several meters.

Where can I find quality agates?

Many lakes and even river banks are well known for producing quality agates – most notably the Great Lakes. If you do a little research on your local area you may very likely find at least one location that is known to produce agates. Whatever beach you choose, there will likely be some areas that look more gravelly than others.

Are there agates in the Snake River?

Over the years I had heard rumors of agates being found in the gravels of the ancestral Columbia, Salmon, Clearwater, and Snake River drainages, but thought they were all run of the mill yellow to red carnelian pebbles. The specimens on display in this case were large, well patterned and uniquely colored. I was duly impressed.

Where can I find Oregon agate in Newport?

Beverly Beach and Moolack Beach are approximately 5 miles north of Newport. Both of these beaches are phenomenal locations. In my opinion, they are two of the better beaches to be able find Oregon agates. There are multiple rock piles and streams that feed into the Pacific Ocean along these beaches.

What are agates used for?

Agates are a variety of microcrystalline quartz. They’re typically used as a semiprecious stone when it’s a desirable quality and color. Agates typically form by the deposition of silica from groundwater in the cavities of igneous rocks. This is why sometimes some of the larger agates you find have smooth, round surfaces.
