What is a side chain input?

A sidechain (also seen as side chain or side-chain) input is a special ‘key input’ found on audio compressor units and noise gate units. It’s an additional input, separate to the main input found on the device.

Do you have to sidechain kick and 808?

If your kick has a sharp transient, you don’t need one on the 808 too. Get rid of the transient on the 808, and the two tracks will get out of each other’s way. The kick will provide the initial impact, while the 808 will cover the sustain and body. You can use sidechain compression to make this happen.

What is the point of Sidechaining?

Should you compress every track?

It can be easy to get in the habit of throwing a compressor on every track because we assume we should. But not every sound needs to be compressed. You aren’t doing yourself any favors throwing compression on tracks that already sound fine. The intention should come first.

Should you sidechain your sub bass?

Sidechaining Sub Bass There are multiple ways to use sidechain compression to help instruments cut through the mix. One of the most effective combination is to duck your lowest frequencies (sub bass) every time the kick is playing.

Why do my mixes sound dull?

Mixes usually sound muffled due to a build-up of frequencies in the lower mid-range, between 200-500Hz. Applying a narrow EQ cut to selected tracks in this range can help. Using a High Pass Filter (HPF) on instruments that have little presence at these frequencies can also help increase clarity.

What is the difference between the C4 and the C6?

To create the C6, we took the tried-and-true functions of the C4, and added two additional floating bands plus a sidechain feature, for one-stop vocal and instrument shaping. Equally at home in the studio, live, and in post production, the C6 lets you zero in on problem frequencies with surgical precision.

What can I do with the Yamaha C6?

Perfect for de-essing and de-popping in the studio or onstage, the C6 gives you all the multiband compression and dynamic equalization you need to control, tame, and shape your sound.

What does C6 compression do for You?

With the multiband compression, even problematic-sounding sources can be made to sound good. C6 also helps me to get my main mix to sound big and powerful in club gigs with smaller PAs. I like to use it in groups, to even out guitars, backing tracks and vocals.
