Can you skim coat with setting compound?

Can you skim coat drywall?

Skim coating is a great way to make ugly walls and ceilings new again! A skim coat, also known as a level-five drywall finish, is a thin coat of diluted joint compound that can be applied by hand, paint roller or spray rig. Then it’s smoothed out by using a drywall knife or trowel.

How thick should skim coat be?

Apply the First Skim Coat Apply a thick coat of mud, holding the knife at about a 30° angle to lay it on 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. Cover the whole area to be skimmed and let the mud overlap onto the surrounding surface. Immediately go back and “skim” the excess mud from the surface.

Can I use joint compound instead of plaster?

Using joint compound instead of plaster allows you to get a smoother wall surface with less manual effort. Keep in mind that joint compound is only ideal for gaps that are 1/8” or less. As it dries and sets, this drywall mud is also more prone to cracking.

What is the difference between skim coat and patching compound?

Putty is applied on a surface that already has primer or paint and more commonly used over smaller areas such as when spot correcting minor imperfections like hairline cracks.

Do not use spackling. Spackling is often mistakenly used as a skim-coat. However, spackling is harder to spread, more difficult to sand, and is best used on wood trim to fill large imperfections.
