Can you solder through hole?
The rule for through-hole soldering is that you can put flux on both sides but solder only on one. While holding the PCB in place with a heat resistant pad, tack solder to one side of the lead and place the soldering iron tip where the pad meets the lead. Apply a small amount of solder at this point.
Can you solder light wires?
These small strands can easily become unraveled when placing them under a screw terminal to conduct the electrical power, which can cause a short. You can solder the multistranded wire on lamp cords for a secure termination under the screw terminal.
What is the required hole fill of a plated through-hole?
Populated plated through holes (PTH) should exhibit a vertical solder fill of 100%, with a fully formed fillet on the solder side, and evidence of 100% wetting on the component side lead, barrel and pad. The solder joint surface is smooth, nonporous and undisturbed, with a finish varying from satin to bright.
What solder should I use for LED lights?
Solder: We prefer solder with a 60/40 tin to lead composition and a thickness of 0.20mm. This thickness of solder is perfect for almost all our applications and it’s what we recommend.
Why is soldering not allowed for home wiring?
The main reason soldering is no longer in general use is simply that it takes many, many times longer to solder a connection (and then insulate it) than it does to use a wire nut, which both connects and covers the bare wires in a single operation.
What is wetting action in soldering?
Solder wetting is the part of the process in which metal in the solder bonds with metal on the printed circuit board (PCB) or component. During the wetting process, the solder becomes fluid molten and can adhere properly to the component for an optimal solder joint.
What is via filling?
Via filling is the process of filling the vias with a non-conductive paste in order to close them. Usually this is required for PCBs with a large amount of drills when the fixation in assembly is done by vacuum lifter. By closing the via the runoff of solder is also prevented.
Can LED lights be soldered?
Cut the LED light strip between its contacts. Make sure to center your cut and leave enough pad on both sides to solder. *For single-color and standard RGB strip lights, use scissors or side cutters to cut cleanly across the strip.
How do you choose soldering wire?
Wire for plumbing will be much thicker, 2mm in diameter or higher. Electronics solder wire will be thinner, from 1.5mm down to 1/2mm, or even less. Match the diameter to the size of the connectors and contacts you are soldering. If the diameter of the wire solder is too small, you will be going through too much solder.
What can be used instead of solder?
Electro-conductive glue, like this kind found on Amazon, would be my first choice as an alternative to soldering electronics. In fact, this is the first method I discuss. The great thing is that doesn’t require any heating at all and focuses on sensitive electronics like computers, phones, etc.
