Can you tailor a suit a size down?

The rule of thumb is that you can go down two sizes at a maximum, but a suit jacket or blazer only one size too large is a safer option. The problem is always that jackets that are too large can also be too large in the shoulders, which is a more challenging thing to alter.

What do you do if your suit is too big?

The first (and most obvious) is to see a tailor. They can re-measure you and tighten up areas of the suit to better match your body. You can also buy a smaller belt if it’s still loose around the waist afterwards, but be warned, it can start to make your suit look sloppy if you have to tighten it too much.

Can you alter a suit to make it slimmer?

Yes, a suit can be tailored to be one size smaller. For this, alterations would be needed in the chest, the armhole, and the length of the suit jacket. This is probably the maximum amount of size reduction that you can expect from a suit.

How do you shrink a suit?

Cotton

  1. Wash the garment in hot water.
  2. Put in the dryer on high heat.
  3. Check periodically throughout the drying cycle to make sure you don’t over-shrink the garment.
  4. When it’s the right size, change the dryer setting to low heat or air and dry the rest of the way gently.

How do I know if a suit is too big?

Once again, stand up straight and allow your arms to dangle by your sides. Ideally, you should see about half an inch of linen from your shirt exposed, separating your hands and the jacket sleeve. If the jacket sleeves go beyond this length and cover up all of your shirt linen, it’s probably too big.

How much can a suit be taken out?

Typically, suit jackets have enough seam allowance to allow for 1 – 1.5” of added or reduced length. Exactly how much your sleeves can be adjusted is based on where the buttons on the cuff are placed and if you are willing to pay the added cost in relocating buttons and buttonholes.

Can a modern fit suit be tailored to slim?

A slim-fitting suit that fits the contours of the body more closely has a clean, tailored look. You can alter a suit to your proportions and save money by not having to buy a new one. Have someone else (preferably a tailor) measure your chest, arms, inseam, waist and neck.

Can a suit jacket be made smaller?

A suit jacket’s length can be altered. However, it cannot be made longer – only shorter. It’s a risky alteration because the spacing of the pockets and button holes cannot be changed and if a jacket is shortened too much, you run the risk of compromising the balance of the garment.

Can you shrink a suit in the dryer?

Place the jacket in the dryer if you want it to shrink more. It’s best to start on a low heat setting to see how much the jacket shrinks. You can always dry it more on a higher setting later on. High heat settings in a dryer can make some fabrics such as polyester or silk look worn out.

How do you shrink a mens blazer?

Run the washing machine on the hottest water setting and longest cycle time. You do not need to use detergent to shrink your jacket. Just run the washing machine with plain water. Polyester generally takes more exposure to heat to shrink, whereas cotton can shrink after just one wash cycle.

How loose should a suit be?

A good suit or sports jacket should fall past the waist and drape over the top of the curve formed by the buttocks. An ideal fit will cover a man down to the point where his butt starts to curve back inward, and stop there (but anywhere in that general region is okay).

How tight should a suit be?

You want to be able to pinch around 1 inch of fabric on either side of your thigh. If it’s less than that, your pants are too tight. If it’s more, have your tailor slim the legs with a slight taper so that it gets narrower towards the ankle. This will look great on every body type/size.

Is it possible to get a suit jacket tailored?

The good news is that when it comes to getting a suit jacket tailored, a little work goes a long way in terms dialing in fit. A quick word on terminology: throughout this post I use the term ‘suit jacket.’ In the context of suit jacket alterations, you could also substitute ‘blazer’ or ‘sport coat.’

Is it possible to go down a size in a suit?

However, it’s not major surgery to cinch (“take in”) the sides, waist, chest and arms (more on these alterations later). The rule of thumb is that you can go down two sizes at a maximum, but a suit jacket or blazer only one size too large is a safer option.

How do you tailor a suit?

The first step in tailoring a suit is trying on both the jacket and pants, ideally over one of the dress shirts that you wear to work (not a t-shirt or polo shirt) and while wearing a pair of your dress shoes.
