Does it matter which side the TRV is on?

The vast majority of new TRV’s are bidirectional and can be fitted to either the flow or return, but it is always good practice to fit them to the flow side. If a non bidirectional TRV is fitted on the return side it will create a vibrating sound as the water tries to flow though it.

Do I need PTFE tape on radiator valves?

If you are installing a new central heating component (like a radiator or a radiator valve) then it’s advisable to use PTFE tape AND some silicone-based jointing compound, to make the joint completely watertight.

How do you know which is flow and return on a radiator?

just run the pipes to where they’re going and stick a valve on the end, the system can be filled up, the ends connected together and the flow should be obvious.

Which way do you turn a radiator valve nut to tighten it?

Grip the valve with a pair of water pump pliers. This will prevent you from breaking the copper pipe. Tighten in a clockwise direction. Feel with your fingers to make sure there are no more leaks.

What do the arrows mean on a TRV?

Look on the metal body for some arrows. If there are two, at 90°, then the TRV can go on either end and any way round, i.e vertical or horizontal. If there is only one arrow, it can still go on either end but the arrow must point in the direction of flow (towards rad on flow, away from rad on return).

How do you stop a TRV leak?

Leaky thermostatic radiator valve You can seal a leaky TRV with some plumbers’ tape (plumbers call it PTFE tape). First, isolate the radiator by turning both the TRV and the lockshield valve on the other side to ‘off’ or closed. The two compression nuts are strong suspects for the leak.

How many times should you wrap PTFE tape around radiator valves?

This means the tape will tighten in the right direction and not unravel when you tighten the nut. Wrapping PTFE tape three times around the joint is enough—any more than that and you risk overloading the thread with tape.

What happens if you get flow and return the wrong way round?

If the pipes are reversed, the sensor will record the lower temperature and could compensate to make up the difference. This can result in unwanted noise, or overheating and inefficiency.

What direction does water flow in a radiator?

From the top down or from the bottom up. Believe you find water from the block (which is heated) flows into the lower radiator hose cooling as it traverses upwardly to top of radiator…. cooling as it travels. Back into the block through the top hose.

Why are my radiator valves leaking?

A leaking valve normally occurs when the spindle packing contained within the valve starts to wear out or becomes damaged. This type of leak will normally occur when the valve is in a ‘mid-open’ position – the leak will normally stop when you fully close the valve.

How do you tighten a union nut on a radiator?

If this doesn’t do the job, follow these steps:

  1. Drain your radiator.
  2. Remove the nut from the leaking radiator pipe using a spanner.
  3. Wrap PTFE tape around where the face of the olive meets the joint.
  4. Use your spanner to tighten back up.

Are westherm radiator valves TRVs?

I moved into my house approx. 2 years ago, and we have Westherm radiator valves on all radiators. It’s just come to light that they should be TRVs, but I can’t work out how to set them correctly etc. They’re quite old valves, with two small plastic pins which can be removed, and placed at different positions.

How can I fix a’westherm four’thermostatic radiator valve?

How can I fix a ‘Westherm Four’ thermostatic rad. valve? Regardless of the temperature setting of the valve, the radiator is always ON. Rotating the cap makes no difference. Under the control head is a brass pin – they often get stuck in the fully on position – remove the control head and pull the litle pin up gently with pliers.

How do you calibrate a TRV?

Most trvs are not calibrated to a temperature. Most economical way is to start off with all rooms on about 2 and wear a woollie whilst the house stabilises. Leave it like this for at least 3 hours from getting up. timer should be on constant heating for this exercise.
