Should 800m runners do sprints?

If an 800m runner is fast, keep them fast. While training max speed occasionally is necessary, it is not the most important aspect in sprinting an in 800. Max speed does not matter if the athlete is not able to stay with the more endured athletes until the last 200m.

What is a good 800m time for high school?

I would say anything 2:05 or below, assuming your training isn’t too rigorous. Of course if you’re running 60 miles a week and run 2:05 that would not be considered good, but if you’re running the 20-30 miles a week that most high school 800 runners run then 2:05 or under is good.

What is a good 800m sprint time?

300m / 800m Sprint Test

Rating Time (seconds)
above average 59.1 – 65
good 54.1 – 59
very good 48 – 54
excellent < 48

How much should an 800m runner weight?

For distance running it would be around 140-145lbs.

Can 800m runners be muscular?

Yes, but only speaking generally when taking averages. Any individual could be larger or skinnier than normal for their event.

How do I make my 800m faster?

To run a faster 800m, create a training schedule for yourself, alternating 400m distances to develop sprinting speed with 1600m distances to develop a high-speed endurance pace. Stretch properly before each training session, stay hydrated, and give yourself off-days so your muscles can rest and recover.

Should 800m runners run cross country?

The 800 is more aerobic than anaerobic, so yes it would absolutely help. Anyone who just says “focus on speed” clearly does not know how the body’ should energy systems work and should not be given any credence. Do cross if you want to improve your 800.

Do long runs help 800m?

Depends on your background. There are plenty of guys in HS and college running high level 800s off a cross country and middle distance base. For those guys, a long run of 60-90 minutes may make sense during base building phase into early and mid season.

How to train for an 800 meter race?

These components will need regular training stimuli to stay high, but the real training focus should be on developing sub-maximal stamina in order to not let the second lap of the 800 meter race drop more than 4% of the first lap time. Developing stamina in Type 1 800 meter runners is not like developing stamina in 3200 meter and 5K runners.

What does a high school coach need to be for 800m runners?

High school coaches need to be skilled at developing both Type 1 and Type 2 800 meter runners. The Type 1 runner is the 400 meter runner moving up to the 800 meters, while the Type 2 800 meter runner, ( see my related article: The 800 Meter Runner: Endurance [Type 2] ), is a miler or two-miler moving down into the event.

Is over speed training bad for 800 meters runners?

This is where over speed training comes in. Most young 800 meters runners can benefit by training with the sprinters verses training with the middle distance runners. The first, the very first empirical evaluation (actual time trials) that I need is four 400 meter times.

Is the 800m a sprint?

You are not unique to the distance or cross country runner coming of age where they want to challenge the sprinting distances. I consider the 800 meter a sprint and not a middle distance race and so should you. This is your first mental frame of mind during training and competition.
