How do you pack silage?

The standard rule is that you cannot over-pack the pile. After all of the silage has been unloaded, slope the sides and crown the top of the pile and pack for the final time. The final pack should be done across the pile and then end to end. Be careful not to tip the packing tractor.

How do you pack a silage bunker?

Pack in thin layers of no more than 15 cm (6 inches) in order to get good air exclusion and high silage density. Be sure to take precautions to prevent tractor rollovers. Excessive packing after the silo is filled does not compensate for packing in thin layers as the silo is being filled.

Why do you cover silage?

Because silage stacks and most bunkers have a large surface compared to the volume contained, covers are especially important to keep losses low. The spoiled silage on the surface of a 14 x 28 m (40 x 80 foot) silo is estimated to be worth six times or more than the cost of a plastic cover.

What happen to your silage if you are not tightly close the cover?

When silage is not tightly covered, air and moisture can easily enter the silo and adversely affect both the ensiling process and the quality of silage during storing and feeding. This creates a great potential for excessive dry matter (DM) and nutrient losses, moldy feed and other problems.

How do you size a silage pile?

Example Calculation The pounds of silage in the silo is calculated by multiplying: Length (ft) x width (ft) x depth (ft) x density (lb/cu-ft) at the final moisture content. For example the silo is 50 feet long by 30 feet wide and the silage averages 12 feet deep.

How do you make silage in plastic bags?

Filling the polythene bag

  1. Fill the polythene bag with forage mixture to 1/3 full.
  2. Sprinkle a layer of cassava chips.
  3. Press the mixture with hands to force out as much air as possible.
  4. Repeat the process until the bag is full leaving room for tying.
  5. Tie the bag with sisal twine or cotton thread.

How long will wrapped silage last?

In general, forages baled at 40-60% moisture will maintain feed value for about 12 months as long as the integrity of the plastic is maintained. However, even where the forage was baled at the appropriate moisture level and the plastic has minimal holes, it is good practice to feed baleage bales within 9 months.

How big of silage bunker do I need?

To determine the minimum bunker width, simply multiply the packing tractor width by 2. If using an 8-foot wide tractor, the minimum bunker width is 16 feet for full coverage of the silage while packing.

What is the maximum slope recommended when filling and packing silage pits?

Pack the forage at a maximum slope of 3:1 • prevent the slope from becoming too steep.

How long should silage ferment before feeding?

10 days to 3 weeks
The fermentation process takes 10 days to 3 weeks for completion. Silages should not be fed until after this process is completed for the best milk production and feed intake. Thus, the recommendation is to wait at least 3 weeks before feeding new crop silages.

What keeps silage from spoiling?

To secure against spoilage, seal plastic along the feedout edge with gravel-filled silage “tubes” or bags to keep out the air. Alternatively, double or triple stack tires along the feedout edge. Gravel-filled bags really help to keep the plastic in place when a silo needs to be split.

How much silage is in a cubic meter?

To convert cubic meters of silage to tonnes of fresh weight the calculated volume is multiplied by the appropriate conversion factor from Table 1 below….Worked example.

Silage dry matter (%) Tonnes of silage per cubic meter
20 Multiply by 0.77
25 Multiply by 0.68
30 Multiply by 0.60
35 Multiply by 0.54

How do you pack silage in a bag?

In the bagging process, silage is unloaded from a standard silage trailer onto a belt conveyor that carries it into the rotor of the bagger. From there, it is mechanically packed into the bag. Cables along each side of the bag run from the bagger to a backstop to allow for control of packing density.

How long does silage last in bag?

around 12 months
The typical life of silage stored in bags is around 12 months due to plastic integrity issues.
