How long is RNLI training?

After 6 months of regular training, and getting to know and work with the crew, trainees may, depending on their progress, attend the Trainee Crew course at RNLI College in Poole, Dorset. After completing their 12-month probationary period and assessments, trainees become fully fledged crew members.

What qualifications do you need to join the RNLI?

Our crew members need to:

  • be over 17 years old (with the permission of your parents) or over 18.
  • be under 55 years old (inshore lifeboat crew) or 65 (all-weather lifeboat crew)
  • complete a health assessment, including an eyesight test.
  • be physically fit.
  • live and/or work close to a lifeboat station.

When did RNLI College open?

28 July 2004
RNLI College is the home of RNLI training and was opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 28 July 2004, when it was known as the Lifeboat College.

Do RNLI members earn?

Most of the members of its lifeboat crews are unpaid volunteers. The RNLI is based in Poole, Dorset. It has 238 lifeboat stations and operates 444 lifeboats.

Is the RNLI College fully accessible to guests?

Please note that the RNLI College is a working venue and so we cannot guarantee access to the wave tank or simulator due to training requirements. The building is designed to be fully accessible to all guests and we have two lifts located at the reception for easy access to each floor.
