How long should a tuna leader be?

For chunking smaller (under 200 lbs) tuna, a 6 foot leader will suffice. For larger (or giant) tuna, one generally uses a 10-15 foot leader. When jigging, you can usually get a way with a 3 foot shock leader.

What is helium used for on a fishing boat?

Helium balloon fishing is actually just a modification to kite fishing. The helium balloon is added to the kite on windless days to keep it up in air so that bait that dangles below remains on or near the surface of the water.

What size hooks for chunking tuna?

Speaking of hooks – 8/0 is about the right size, and rig it to a five foot fluorocarbon leader. Leader size can vary radically, because tuna can be finicky when it comes to heavy leaders. When possible, 80-lb or 100-lb test fluorocarbon can be used and it gives you the ability to muscle the fish around pretty well.

What hooks for chunking tuna?

Many anglers use 4x strong ringed live bait hooks for chunking. However, we also recommend using 2x or 3x circle hooks for several reasons: These hooks have a smaller visible profile the ā€œJā€ hooks of the same rating (great for line-shy fish)

What is the best leader for tuna fishing?

Fluorocarbon Fishing Leader is critical to success for line-shy fish. It refracts less light than regular monofilament, making it more difficult for fish to detect in the water. This can make all the difference for picky fish such as bluefin tuna.

Why do they use a kite in fishing?

This fishing technique allows anglers to create a very natural bait presentation, while simultaneously covering a large span of ocean which would otherwise be inaccessible using conventional fishing techniques. Kite fishing also affords fisherman the opportunity to fish with more than one line.

How do you make helium fish balloons?

The helium balloon is added to the kite on windless days to keep it up in air so that bait that dangles below remains on or near the surface of the water. In helium balloon fishing (or kite fishing), once the bait is hooked, the fishing line is then clipped to the kite line and flown out over the surface of the water.

What is the best hook for live bait?

For live-bait fishing, I recommend thin wire hooks. This style penetrates your bait more easily and damages it less, thus allowing it to move freely on the hook and stay alive longer than when using heavy-weight hooks. Most live-bait hooks for inshore salt waters range from size 1/0 to 8/0.
