How many disused underground stations are there?
Though some 40 Underground stations have been abandoned or relocated in their time, we’ve selected eleven that are still at least mostly standing, and sport the most interesting tales – all to uncover a little hidden history of the capital’s favourite transport network.
Why are Tube stations abandoned?
Some stations were closed down because a scarcity of passengers made them uneconomic; some became redundant after lines were re-routed or replacements were built; and others are no longer served by the Underground but remain open to National Rail main line services.
Why was Aldwych closed?
Anyway, when in 1993, it was decided that the lifts needed replacing, the station’s fate was sealed. To spend £3 million in new lifts that would be used by just 450 people per day was never going to be approved. It closed on 30th September 1994.

Aldwych closed to passengers in 1994 and though it was never a successful station, from its opening in 1907 until then it still played an important role in London’s history.

What happened Strand station?
It opened 30 November 1907 as Strand Station, but the name changed in 1915 to Aldwych. Confusingly this was because the nearby Northern Line Station Charing Cross called itself Strand. Much later in 1979 the name was changed back to Charing Cross! Down on the platforms you can see the painted letters of ‘Strand’.
