Is siloxane water soluble?

Polyhydantoinyl siloxane (PHS) can only be dissolved in water and ethanol mixtures. Water is a more economical and environmentally friendly solvent than any organic solvent. Much effort has been made to enhance the solubility of polyhydantoinyl siloxane in water so that use of an organic solvent can be avoided.

D4 has been identified as a persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) and very persistent very bioaccumulative (vPvB) substance. D5 has been identified as a vPvB substance.

IsoPropyl alcohol is the best way to remove the remaining uncured PDMS. The alternative is: Using Piranha solution (Hydrogen peroxide and Sulphuric acid in the ratio of 2:3 by volume). However, it’s a highly corrosive acid which needs extreme caution while handling.

D4 is an odourless, colourless liquid mostly used as an intermediate or basic raw material in the production of silicone rubbers, gels and resins. When used as an intermediate during the manufacturing process, virtually all D4 is consumed with only a tiny amount remaining in final products.

Is D4 banned?

At the beginning of 2017 the European Commission (EC) proposed to ban Cyclotetrasiloxane (D4) and Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) in rinse-off cosmetic products, with 0.1% or more of either substance. This ban, when officially published, is going to cover products such as shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, etc.

Is D4 safe?

Yes. D4, D5 and D6 are safe for the environment and for human health, when used for their intended purposes. Silicones are not new on the market. In fact, they have been used for more than six decades.

Which solvent can dissolve PDMS?

n-hexane and toluene are the two best solvents for PDMS. However, I would recommend n-hexane to dissolve PDMS.
