Is there a shortage of levetiracetam?

For a number of months, people have reported occasional problems getting levetiracetam, known as the brand name Keppra, from their pharmacy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now listing a shortage of generic levetiracetam from a few different manufacturers.

Why is there a shortage of Keppra?

Pfizer has levetiracetam injection on shortage due to manufacturing delays. Sagent did not provide a reason for the shortage. Sun Pharma are not manufacturing levetiracetam injection at this time.

What is a substitute for levetiracetam?

If not tolerated then levetiracetam, oxcarbazepine or sodium valproate can be used. For generalised tonic-clonic seizures, sodium valproate is recommended as first-line treatment. If this is unsuitable, lamotrigine is recommended. Carbamazepine and oxcarbazepine can be considered as alternatives.
