What can I use to seal a muffler?

An exhaust tape is an ideal solution if you are dealing with a larger hole. Wrap the tape around the hole, making sure to extend a few inches on either side. Cover the hole with at least two layers of tape for effective sealing.

You can use silicone on the join to the head as it is cooled by the head itself and does not get that hot. The Y piece joins generally run to hot for even the hi temp silicone and it burns off and the join then tends to leak.

No, duct tape is not a safe option for repairing damaged exhaust mufflers or exhaust pipes. Duct tape is made out of cotton mesh, and is covered with a type of plastic called polyethelyne, with a rubber-based adhesive underneath. When it gets hot, duct tape melts and becomes flammable.
