What does a BMW differential do?

It compensates for different rotational speeds of the rear wheels, particularly on curves. The inner curve wheel covers less distance than the outer curve wheel, meaning the outer wheel turns faster when cornering.

Does BMW have open differential?

Mechanically, the answer is yes – there is a completely open rear differential between the two rear wheels. This open diff is however assisted by an automatic differential braking system that will apply resistance to one wheel to equalize traction between the two wheels.

Does BMW 428i have limited-slip differential?

Only M models received limited-slip differentials which left the 228i/328i/428i with just electronic traction control to regulate wheel spin. The 28i/30i models becomes much more capable and usable performance cars with a proper limited-slip diff, especially when tuned for more power.

Is a limited slip differential worth it?

A limited slip differential increases a car’s power and speed by utilising engine power more efficiently, thus allowing for a smoother and more enjoyable drive. Even on standard roads, LSD units can help prevent slippage and spinouts for near-perfect traction that translates to a safer and smoother ride.

How do you read a BMW differential tag?

The numbers at the begining tell you what the ratio is. For example, a diff that starts off with 4,27 #### would be a 4.27. When the tag starts off with a “S”, then it is a limited slip unit. For example, S 3,73 #### would be a 3.73 LSD.

Is limited slip better in snow?

Therefore, if one wheel is on ice, snow, or mud, it will spin, and the driving force is lost.
