What does a free hub do?
The freehub is an extension of the right-hand side of the rear wheel’s hub. It contains a system that engages with the wheel when you’re pedalling, to propel you forward, and which disengages when you stop pedalling so that the wheel continues to turn without the gears and pedals turning.
Are all Hg Freehubs the same?
An XD freehub body is physically different from an HG body, but the design is actually based on one, so it’s very common to be able to buy an XD body that’ll fit on a hub that came with an HG body.
Why do Freehubs make noise?
When the freehub body is driven in the opposite direction, the pawls can’t engage with the teeth of the drive ring, so it is able to spin freely. The pawls click up and down over the teeth, which is what produces the buzz of the freehub.
Why are Freehubs better?
Increasing the number of pawls and/or engagement points makes the freehub engage faster when you start pedaling, with less free “spinning” before the force of your legs gets put to use. For single-speed drive trains, both the freewheel and and freehub mechanisms are in common use.
Can I change my freehub?
You can either buy a new freehub body or if you’re lucky your local bike shop or bike recycling project may have a stash! Your replacement freehub body needs to have the same interface as your old one (meaning the same spline pattern) so it can fit onto your old hub.

What is the difference between HG and XD hubs?
Micro Spline uses 23 splines to mount the cassette, whereas HG has only 13. This extra spreading of load makes aluminium freehub bodies more durable. XDR vs XD is just the same as Shimano’s 11-speed HG road vs MTB. Probably the Micro Spline road system will have the same thing, but it hasn’t been released yet.
Can I put any freehub on my hub?
Each brand and model of hubs also uses its own freehub/driver to hub interface. If you need to change your freehub/driver, you will need to get the same brand and model. You cannot mix-n-match freehub/drivers from different brands. They will not work.
Will a 12 speed cassette fit on a 10 speed hub?
In addition to being able to fit our 12-speed cassettes on Shimano HG 10 and 11 speed freehubs, you can also convert the ROTOR 13-speed cassette into a 12-speed one and use it with your current wheels.
What is a HG cassette?
HG, short for ‘HyperGlide’, is the most common and traditional freehub body design available. Created by Shimano, it is the standard used for cassettes that have at least an 11-tooth cog as the smallest cog on the cassette. HG Specific cassettes are available in 8,9,10, and 11speed options.
Can you put a Shimano cassette on a SRAM XD hub?
The SRAM XD driver and cassette works with existing Shimano-type cassette tools. The cassette slides on much like the existing cassette, which interlocks with a spline system at the rear of the driver.
