What does a petcock valve do?

A petcock is a small shut-off valve used to control the flow of liquid or gas. Historically, petcocks were threaded valves controlled by a butterfly handle; modern petcocks are typically ball valves.

Which way is open on a petcock?

Re: Petcock-which way? ( That is, if the handle is 90 degrees to the flow orfice (pipe, drain etc.) then the valve is CLOSED. If it is parallel to the direction of flow (in line), then it is OPEN.

Should the fuel valve be on or off?

Not only does shutting off the fuel valve prevent the engine from flooding while being transported, it prevents flooding because of contamination in the float valve, and extends the life of the float valve by decreasing pressure on it.

Why do motorcycles have a petcock?

The purpose of a motorcycle petcock is to allow the rider to control the fuel flow to the engine. The petcock has three positions: ON, OFF, and RESERVE. The ON position allows fuel to flow from the gas tank to the engine. The OFF position stops the flow of fuel.

Why is it called a petcock?

The “pet” part seems to be rooted in an old sense of “pet” meaning “small,” possibly related to our modern “petty,” in turn harking back to the French “petit” (small), which all makes sense since a “petcock” is, as we noted, a small faucet.

When should I turn off my petcock?

To my knowledge the reserve setting is for reserving that last bit of gas. If the bike starts to sputter, you’re probably low on fuel, you can then switch reserve and have maybe another 50 miles of fuel left. I always set the valve to off if it won’t be ridden within a days time.

How do I know if my fuel valve is on or off?

When the long side of the nub or handle is parallel to the incoming gas line, it’s open and the gas is flowing. When it’s turned a quarter turn, perpendicular to the incoming pipe, it’s closed.

Should Turn petcock off?

The primary reason for shutting off the fuel is safety. On a motorcycle the fuel tank is directly above the engine. If fuel were to leak it would drip directly on the hot engine.

Do fuel injected motorcycles have a petcock?

Gasoline essential to the proper operation of your motorcycle is controlled by a “Fuel Control Valve” otherwise known as a “Petcock”. This valve is characteristically located at the bottom of the fuel tank and can have a number of different configurations. Fuel-Injected motorcycles rarely have a petcock.

Should you turn off fuel tap on motorcycle?

The primary reason for shutting off the fuel is safety. On a motorcycle the fuel tank is directly above the engine. If fuel were to leak it would drip directly on the hot engine. This along with the fact that most motorcycles use a rubber supply hose that is exposed to the engine heat and the resulting decomposition.

Do fuel injected motorcycles have a fuel valve?

How do I know if a valve is open or closed?

Open or closed: When the handle of a ball valve is parallel to the valve or pipe, it’s open. When it’s perpendicular, it’s closed.
