What does BMW NOx sensor do?

The sensor, mounted on the exhaust system before the catalytic converter, measures the level of nitrogen oxide (i.e. NOx) to feedback data to the engine’s computer so adjustments to valve timing and fuel mixture can be made.

What is a Denox sensor?

NOx sensors monitor the level of nitrogen oxide being emitted by a diesel vehicle to ensure compliance with emissions regulations.

Can you repair a NOx sensor?

The NOx sensor is a very complicated component and can be expensive to repair however, it’s often not actually the sensor which is causing the problem but the lambda probe inside the exhaust which tests the NOx levels which has malfunctioned, and this is something which can easily be replaced.

What happens when a NOx sensor goes bad?

When a nitrogen oxide sensor fails on a truck with a diesel engine, bad things start to happen. The motor may begin to run rough and fuel consumption can drastically increase. Next, the motor may go into derate, or “limp mode,” and finally, the truck may break down and stop running altogether.

Can you drive a car with a faulty NOx sensor?

Of course, you can drive with a bad Nox sensor. However, I do not recommend it. Driving with a faulty Nox sensor for an extended period will cause several drivability issues. It may cause poor engine power output, erratic idling, sudden engine misfire, and bad gas mileage.

Can I drive with bad NOx sensor?

Driving with a faulty Nox sensor for an extended period will cause several drivability issues. It may cause poor engine power output, erratic idling, sudden engine misfire, and bad gas mileage. Before the engine starts projecting any of these problems, the ECU will trigger an engine warning light on the dashboard.

What makes a NOx sensor go bad?

Why Do NOx Sensors Fail? Given their location, it will come as no surprise that soot buildup on the sensor is one of the most common reasons for failure. It’s also not unheard of that damaged cables can be the root cause of the issue, and in this case, it should be visually apparent where the problem lies.

Is it OK to drive with bad NOx sensor?
