What does slipping stitch markers mean?

SM and SLM are both short for the term “slip marker”. When your knitting pattern tells you to slip marker the marker shall keep its place between the same two stitches. All you have to do is move it (slip it ) from one needle to the other.

How many stitch markers do you need?

If you’re working a pattern that repeats often, you can place a stitch marker on every few rows and count as you go. For instance, you can place a stitch marker every 10 rows when knitting in garter stitch and then you only have to count how many groups of 10 you have (it’s easier than counting 100 individual rows).

How do you make your own stitch markers?

Steps for making stitch markers

  1. Open the jump ring. Use your pliers to gently open the ring, twisting it open instead of pulling it open which can unnecessarily weaken the metal.
  2. Add charm to jump ring.
  3. Add lobster clasp to jump ring.
  4. Gently twist the jump ring back to the closed position, trying not to leave a gap.

They can be used to mark a certain number of stitches, the beginning of a round, where to make a particular stitch, and more. Patterns often call for stitch markers with the abbreviations “pm” (place marker) and “sm” (slip marker).

How do you organize a stitch marker?

Store small items like darning needles and stitch markers in small containers like an Altoids tin, Lantern Moon Mort Ort Bin, or the Namaste Buddy Case. Clear pouches or zipper cases are a favorite way to store tools since you can see what you have, making finding something easier.
