What does UNC mean on a bolt?

Unified Coarse Threads
When tapping bolts or threading screws, it’s essential to know the proper thread size. There are two main kinds of threads in the Unified Screw Thread (UST) Standard—UNF and UNC. UNF is the designation for Unified Fine Threads. Meanwhile, UNC denotes Unified Coarse Threads.

What thread pitch is UNC?

UNC Thread ANSI/ASME B1. 1

Nominal Diameter Major Diameter Inch Pitch mm
5/8″ – 11 UNC 0.625 2.309
3/4″ – 10 UNC 0.750 2.540
7/8″ – 9 UNC 0.875 2.822
1″ – 8 UNC 1.000 3.175

What is UNC fitting?

The Unified Thread Series is classified into coarse threads, fine threads and extra fine threads much like Metric screw threads are. UNC: Is the symbol for Unified coarse pitch threads. UNF: Is the symbol for Unified fine pitch threads.

How do you identify an UNC bolt?

The easiest to look at first is to determine if it is BSW , UNC or UNF. This is mainly because you can count the threads per inch quite easily by placing a rule or venire next to the bolt. If the bolt is not long enough, count the threads per half inch and then double your result.

How do you read UNC threads?

Use the abbreviation to determine the thread standard if it is listed.

  1. If you see a callout like #4-40 UNC-3A x . 5, the UNC tells you that you have a coarse screw.
  2. UNC or coarse screws are the most common type and used for general purposes.
  3. You may also see a J, like UNJC or UNJF.

What does UNC threads mean?

Unified National Coarse Thread
UNC – Unified National Coarse Thread, comparable with the ISO metric thread. UNF – Unified National Fine Thread.

What is a Class 1A thread?

Classes 1A and 1B are considered an extremely loose tolerance thread fit. This class is suited for quick and easy assembly and disassembly. Outside of low-carbon threaded rod or machine screws, this thread fit is rarely specified.

Is Unc the same as NPT?

UNC is Unified Coarse thread , the successor to the obsolete National Coarse (NC) thread. UNF is Unified Fine thread, the successor to the obsolete National Fine (NF) thread. NPT National pipe thread is used (in the U.S.) for plumbing of water and gas pipes, and threaded electrical conduit.

What is UNC measurement?

Unified form thread designations are represented by abbreviations such as UNC (unified coarse), UNF (unified fine), UNEF (unified extra fine), UNS (unified special) and UN (unified constant pitch), with the thread major diameter preceding the designation for example, 9/16” UNC, 9/16” UNF.

How do you size an UNC bolt?

The thread length of UNC or UNF bolts manufactured to BS1768, with diameter d and thread length t, is: t = 2d + 1/4″ up to a length of 6″, where the formula becomes t = 2d + 1/2″.

Are UNC and NPT threads compatible?

Threads are divided into four primary main types: NPT, G/BSP, PT, metric or UN/UNF. Most North American hydraulic and pneumatic components are compatible with National Pipe Threads (NPT), or Unified Threads (UN/UNF).

What are UNC threads used for?

Application of UNC (Unified coarse) thread Coarse thread series (M/UNC/UNRC) is generally used for mass production of threaded fasteners, such as bolts, screws, nuts, etc.

How do you read thread size UNC?

Use the first number to figure out the diameter of the threads.

  1. For example, on a #4-40 UNC-3A x . 5 screw, #4 represents the diameter.
  2. The diameter is sometimes listed as a fraction, such as ¼. It has a diameter of 1⁄4 in (0.64 cm).
  3. To help decipher the number ratings, look up a conversion chart online.

Are NC and UNC threads the same?

NC/UNC/UNJC These tap sets come with a combination of National Course (NC), United National Coarse threads (UNC), and UNJC taps. UNC threads allow for easy removal. UNJC threads are almost identical to UNC threads except that they have a larger root radius for improved thread strength.
