What is ACFM inspection?

Alternating current field measurement (ACFM) is an electromagnetic inspection technique that introduces an alternating current into the surface of a component to detect surface-breaking cracks.

How does ACFM work?

The ACFM probe induces a uniform alternating current in the area under test and detects magnetic field of the resulting current near the surface. This current is undisturbed if the area is defect free. A crack redirects the current around the ends and faces of the crack.

What is the difference between eddy current and ACFM?

ACFM is seen as an advanced inspection technique similar to Eddy Current Testing, but with significantly lower amount of spurious signals. Just like MPI, ACFM can test welds in underwater conditions, but ACFM has a higher probability of detection (PoD).

Can ACFM detect defects in non-ferrous metals?

Generally not on ferrous metals, but sub-surface defects can be detected in non-ferrous metals if they are near the surface. The currents induced in the ACFM ® technique are confined to a thin layer at the surface so that only defects lying within this layer can perturb the current and thus be detected.

The perturbation in the current flow, and hence the size of the ACFM ® signal, is related to the extra path length, i.e. the length down the crack face. In ferritic steel, the skin depth is small compared to the crack depth, so no information can be gained on crack inclination.
