What is PROTOPIC Ointment used for?

PROTOPIC Ointment is a prescription medicine used on the skin (topical) to treat eczema (atopic dermatitis). PROTOPIC Ointment is in a class of medicines called topical calcineurin inhibitors. It is for adults and children 2 years of age and older who do not have a weakened immune system.

Where is Protopic used?

Protopic ointment should be applied as a thin layer to affected or commonly affected areas of the skin. Protopic ointment may be used on any part of the body, including face, neck and flexure areas, except on mucous membranes.

Is Protopic good for skin?

Some people have developed skin cancer or lymphoma after using Protopic or pimecrolimus (Elidel). However, it is not known if either of these medicines causes skin cancer or lymphoma. Talk to your doctor about your individual risk.

Can I use Protopic everyday?

The ointment should be applied as a thin layer to the skin. When used for flare-ups, Protopic can be used for short-term and intermittent long-term treatment, but it should not be used continuously on a long-term basis. Protopic treatment should begin as soon as symptoms appear.

Protopic is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis. Protopic may be used alone or with other medications. Protopic belongs to a class of drugs called Immunosuppressive Agents, Topical; Calcineurin Inhibitors. It is not known if Protopic is safe and effective in children younger than 2 years of age.
