Who is Yu and what did he do?

Yu the Great (Da Yu 大禹) was in Chinese mythology the forefather of the Xia dynasty 夏(17th-15th cent. BCE) and a demi-god who tamed the floods. Yu is mentioned in many ancient books of the Western Zhou period 西周(11th cent.-770 BCE), like the Classics Shangshu 尚書and Shijing 詩經.

Under the command of Shun, Gun, the father of Yu, found out a way to tame the flood. He adopted a method of building embankments with soil to block the raging water. However, this traditional way no longer worked well nine years later. Powerful floodwater breached the dike and brought disaster to the people again.

How did Yu control the floods?

He worked alongside the common people to dredge the riverbeds, which opened up river courses and allowed floodwaters to drain into the ocean. He also built a system of canals so the waters could irrigate the farmers’ fields. Yu staunchly continued this work for 13 years.
